Too Many Tabs Open in My Brain

There’s a common misconception that multidisciplinary practitioners are simply dabbling in different fields out of necessity rather than intent. But for many—myself included—working across multiple disciplines isn’t about survival; it’s a deliberate choice, fueled by curiosity and the pursuit of knowledge. While this brings excitement, it also comes with challenges—balancing multiple interests, striving for excellence in each, and navigating overstimulation, procrastination, and decision paralysis.

This led me to question: Why do I feel stuck? I also became curious about whether my fascination with hands—whether in keeping them busy or using them as communicative tools—was shaping my perception in ways I hadn’t realized. As I delved deeper, I came across the concept of cognitive load and recognized that my observation wasn’t just personal but part of a broader challenge in today’s digital age of endless possibilities.

From this inquiry, my mixed-media installation emerged—a piece designed to subtly mimic and explore the sensation of cognitive strain, where mental capacity is stretched beyond its limits, leaving us overwhelmed and disoriented.

The work consists of three interconnected elements:

1. A kinetic piece featuring rotating tiles that form a single illustration—only to fragment and disorient at unpredictable intervals, mirroring cognitive strain. It shifts from calm to chaotic, inviting viewers to pause and reflect on the mental clutter we experience daily.
2. A 2.5-meter-high lino print, interwoven with copper threading, symbolizing neural complexity and the role of hands in cognition.
3. An illustrated book, presenting the research theme of Cognitive Overload in a lighter, more digestible format.

The decision to use multiple mediums in this installation was intentional. I wanted the piece itself to embody my research—reflecting the polymath and the fragmented, overstimulated state of mind that comes with it, while also exploring how tactile, hands-on engagement can bring clarity in a chaotic digital landscape.

As my first large-scale attempt at expressionism and kinetic installation, this project was part of my final research for my Master’s degree at UAL. It was exhibited at the Postgraduate Show held at the London College of Communication, University of the Arts London from 28 November 2024 – 2nd December 2025
